TURIN, Italy - A glaring own goal helped Empoli to a 1-0 win at Torino in Serie A on Wednesday, guaranteeing that the Tuscan side will avoid relegation.

Three minutes in, Torino goalkeeper Daniele Padelli couldn't control a long pass and redirected the ball into his own net.

Empoli also hit the woodwork twice.

Torino remained ninth, limiting its hopes of a Europa League spot and ending a six-match unbeaten streak.

Empoli is 13th, 14 points from safety with four matches remaining — a solid result for a squad that was in Serie B last season.

The match was originally scheduled for Monday but was moved so Torino could honour the 66th anniversary of the airplane crash that destroyed the "Grande Torino" squad that had won five straight titles.
