Pittsburgh goaltender Matt Murray will miss 3-6 weeks with a broken hand, the Penguins announced Saturday morning.

Murray sustained the injury in Team North America’s 4-3 loss to Russia on Monday. He was pulled at 15:43 of the second period after allowing four goals on 19 shots.

Following the game, Murray said he jammed his thumb midway through the second period but that the injury didn't impact his ability to play.

The 22-year-old went 15-6 with a 2.08 goals-against average and .923 save percentage in the playoffs last season.

With the NHL's pre-season schedule beginning September 25, Murray could return during the first week of the regular season or miss up to 12 games.

The Penguins' first pre-season game is September 27 against the Detroit Red Wings. The NHL regular season begins Wednesday, October 12.
