St. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - The Philadelphia Phillies recalled catcher Cameron Rupp from Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Thursday and returned outfielder Aaron Altherr to Double-A Reading.

Rupp, 25, batted .308 in a September call-up last year in his only experience in the majors. He was hitting .167 in 34 games at Lehigh Valley.

Phillies backup catcher Wil Nieves appeared to injure his right quad on a ninth-inning double Wednesday against Atlanta.

Altherr was called up Monday to take the roster spot when Tony Gwynn Jr. went on the bereavement list following the death of his father, Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn.

He made his major league debut on Monday in a game against Atlanta, flying out as a pinch-hitter in the 12th inning.

The Phillies are in St. Louis for a four-game series with the Cardinals.
