Pirates start No. 1 in MLB Power Rankings

The Pittsburgh Pirates open the season in top spot of the TSN.ca MLB Power Rankings, ahead of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Seattle Mariners.

The Pittsburgh Pirates open the season in top spot of the TSN.ca MLB Power Rankings, ahead of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Seattle Mariners.

This isn't an indication that the Pirates are overwhelming favourites this season, but they are relatively healthy and have an improving lineup.

The Pirates are faced with not only their own challenging division -- the Cardinals, Cubs, Brewers and Reds make the NL Central as tough as any in baseball -- but other top National League teams, like the Dodgers and Washington Nationals will make for a challenging road to the World Series.

The Nationals, in particular, are a team to watch. They open the season ranked seventh, but that's largely based on injuries to three lineup regulars (3B Anthony Rendon, CF Denard Span and RF Jayson Werth), but have a pitching staff that could be the envy of baseball -- so good that they don't have room for Tanner Roark.

In the American League, the Seattle Mariners are poised to take the next step, with troubles hitting some of their competition in the American League West and an upgraded lineup to go with a strong starting staff.

Other top teams from the American League are the Central's Detroit Tigers and Kansas City Royals.

As far as the rankings go, it's a down year for the American League East -- for the first time in forever. Maybe a team in the AL East will emerge as a frontline contender but, right now, there are lots of question marks to go around.

Staying in the AL East, the Toronto Blue Jays are the highest-ranked team in the division to start the year, at 17, but that's only one spot ahead of a Baltimore Orioles club that is currently missing catcher Matt Wieters and SS J.J. Hardy.

(Note: Rankings were supposed to go up Monday, but due to technical issues, they run today. Hooray!)

The challenge for the Pirates is getting enough offensive support for superstar CF Andrew McCutchen, but they're getting there. 3B Josh Harrison had a breakout year in 2014, and young corner outfielders Starling Marte and Gregory Polanco can put up numbers too. Mix that with a solid pitching staff and the Pirates are poised to contend in the toughest division.

The Dodgers aren't afraid to spend, and they did some remodeling in the offseason, bringing in new keystone combination, Howie Kendrick and Jimmy Rollins as well as a new catcher, Yasmani Grandal. Add in high-ceiling rookie CF Joc Pederson and a couple of veteran starting pichers (Brandon McCarthy and Brett Anderson) and the Dodgers should be contenders.

Expectations are elevated for the Mariners this season. Not only do they have a stellar pitching staff, led by Felix Hernandez and Hisashi Iwakuma, then backed up by youngsters James Paxton and Taijuan Walker, but they brought in some bats, DH Nelson Cruz and OF Seth Smith, to help support the hurlers.
Key Injuries: RF Michael Saunders (oblique).

There's a lot of continuity with this Cardinals team, with a lot of familiar faces from last year's 90-win team, and adding RF Jason Heyward is a good upside acquisition. If veterans like LF Matt Holliday and SS Jhonny Peralta remain productive and a young guy like 2B Kolten Wong could take a step forward, then the Cardinals will be right in the NL Central hunt.

The bats should be there for the Tigers, but the question will be whether or not they have the pitching to hang in the race. With Max Scherzer moving to Washington as a free agent, LHP David Price takes over as staff ace, but righthanders Alfredo Simon and Shane Greene will have to provide mid-rotation stability. Getting a bounceback from RHP Justin Verlander would help, but starting the season on the DL doesn't provide a great deal of optimism for that scenario.

Losing by one run in Game Seven of the World Series was a tough loss, but encouraging enough that the Royals kept most of their lineup intact, but added RF Alex Rios and DH Kendrys Morales as well as RHP Edinson Volquez. It's really not an overpowering roster, but if young starters Yordano Ventura and Danny Duffy continue their ascent, the Royals could be contenders again.

When healthy, the Nats are the team to beat, with a ridiculously deep pitching staff, but they are starting the year with three regulars on the shelf, including 3B Anthony Rendon, who may be their best everyday player. But that pitching -- so deep that they don't have room in the rotation for Tanner Roark, who had a 2.85 ERA and 1.09 WHIP in 31 starts for the Nats last season.

Big improvement is expected for the White Sox, after they brought in LF Melky Cabrera and DH Adam LaRoche to solidify the lineup and RHP Jeff Samardzija to raise the rotation. Off the start, however, staff ace Chris Sale is on the shelf, so that limits the early-season appeal.

Are the Cubs ready to be a legitimately competitive club? Added LHP Jon Lester, C Miguel Montero and CF Dexter Fowler but the real excitement comes from young players, like 3B Kris Bryant (who was sent to the minors), RF Jorge Soler and 2B Javier Baez, with more waiting in the wings.

Not a lot of changes from last year's 82-win club, though 1B Adam Lind could add some pop and a healthy Ryan Braun would help. For the Brewers to hang with the rest in the challenging NL Central, they will need their young pitchers -- Mike Fiers, Wily Peralta, Jimmy Nelson -- to perform.

Last year did not go nearly as planned after the A's looked like the team to beat before making their midseason moves, so they continued with the roster shake-up. The infield -- Ike Davis, Ben Zobrist, Marcus Semien and Brett Lawrie is new and Oakland will need young pitchers -- Jesse Hahn, Kendall Graveman and Drew Pomeranz -- to support Sonny Gray and Scott Kazmir in the rotation.

Added power to the lineup, getting Brandon Moss from Oakland, but a lot of the Indians' fate is going to be determined by young pitchers. LHP Corey Kluber emerged as a shocking Cy Young winner and RHP Carlos Carrasco finished 2014 well, but Danny Salazar was sent down to Triple-A and Trevor Bauer, Zach McAllister and T.J. House need to give them reliable innings.

The pitching staff is still a little banged-up, so the Angels are probably lower than expected in the season-opening rankings. It's going to be fascinating to see how the Josh Hamilton situation plays out. This wouldn't be the first time that I've underestimated the Giants, and 14th for the defending champs does come with skepticism, but their lineup is iffy at the best of times and having lost 3B Pablo Sandoval to free agency and missing RF Hunter Pence to start the year, it's not quite a world championship batting order. If RHP Matt Cain bounces back and if veterans Tim Hudson and Jake Peavy can hold up for a full season, then maybe the Giants will be a playoff team...or maybe this is their post-World Series fall.

There's some urgency for the Jays to win, and after adding 3B Josh Donaldson to the middle of their order, they could power their way to a winning season. The biggest questions revolve around unprovens in regular roles. A rookie centre fielder, Dalton Pompey, and rookie second baseman, Devon Travis, take a couple of spots in the everyday lineup but, more importantly, LHP Daniel Norris and RHP Aaron Sanchez make up 40% of the starting rotation. They might all be great, but they might not.

The Orioles will count on internal improvement in the rotation, looking to Chris Tillman and Kevin Gausman to lead the way, but the additions to the lineup -- SS Everth Cabrera, LF Alejandro De Aza, RF Travis Snider -- aren't likely to have much of an impact.

Lots of expectations for the Red Sox to bounce back from a miserable 2014 season -- after all, they did in 2013 -- but it's fair to question whether a pitching rotation comprised of Rick Porcello, Clay Buchholz, Wade Miley and Justin Masterson is solid enough to win consistently. The good news for Boston is that the AL East appears to be there for the taking anyway.

The Yankees overachieved on their way to 84 wins last season -- their underlying numbers would have suggested a losing record -- and as the team keeps getting older, there is the possibility of the Pinstripers posting their first sub.-500 record since 1992. If they are going to hold on and remain competitive, it will have to be on the strength of young arms like Michael Pineda and Nate Eovaldi...and maybe DH A-Rod can give them 500 productive at-bats for the first time since 2010.

If nothing else, the Padres have shown that they are not satisfied with being also-rans in the NL West, overhauling the roster in the offseason, including a deal for closer Craig Kimbrel on the eve of the season. They also added innings-eating starting pitcher James Shields, a whole new outfield -- LF Justin Upton, CF Wil Myers and RF Matt Kemp -- along with 3B Will Middlebrooks and C Derek Norris. That's a lot of change and it should make the Padres better, but is it enough to make the playoffs? Not sure.

Is there any help for Johnny Cueto in the Reds' rotation? Like Jason Marquis won a spot, didn't he? If the pitching somehow holds up, the Reds have a decent enough lineup when healthy and added veteran Marlon Byrd in the offseason, so just figure out two-to-three spots in the rotation (depending on Homer Bailey's health) and everything will be just fine.

The Astros may be another year away before they are ready to be competitive, but there are some interesting parts here -- including 2B Jose Altuve and RF George Springer -- and they added DH Evan Gattis, SS Jed Lowrie and 3B Luis Valbuena in the offseason (for whatever that may be worth).
