According to a report from Newsday, New York Islanders captain John Tavares underwent right hand surgery last month to fix an issue that lingered throughout the regular season.

However, the star centre is expected to be ready for the start of the 2017-18 season and the Islanders are looking to lock him up long-term this offseason.

Newsday's Arthur Staple reports the Islanders are expected to offer Tavares an eight-year deal worth up to $10 million per year this offseason. He is eligible to sign a contract extension on July 1.

Tavares' right hand reportedly remains in cast, though it is scheduled to be removed next week.

The 26-year-old centre missed the final five games of the Islanders' season with a hamstring injury as his team fell one point shy of a playoff spot (despite winning all five games).

In 77 regular season games, he scored 28 goals and 38 assists. He had topped the 30-goal mark in each of the previous two seasons.

Tavares has been with the Islanders since being selected first overall in the 2009 NHL Draft. He was named captain of the team in 2013.

The Mississauga, ON. native has led the Islanders in points in each of the past three seasons. He will be 27 at the start of next season.
