The Washington Capitals goalie reportedly asked for $8 million in salary arbitration, according to Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post. The team responded with a $5.1 million counter offer.
The 25-year-old from Lloydminster, Saskatchewan posted a 41-20-19 record with a 2.22 goals against average and a .923 save percentage, including nine shutouts in 2014-15. It was Holtby's best season in five years as a pro with the Caps. He lead Washington to a win away from an appearance in the Eastern Conference Final with a 1.71 GAA in 13 games before losing to the New York Rangers in Game 7 of the second round.
If Holtby is awarded the $8 million, however unlikely, he would be the second highest paid goalie behind Henrik Lundqvist who has a $8.5 million cap hit. Carey Price has an average annual value of $6.5 million.
