Dave Dombrowski could be moving closer to becoming the Toronto Blue Jays' next team president.

According to The Toronto Sun's Bob Elliott, representatives from the team's ownership - Rogers Communications- has contacted the former Detroit Tigers general manager about filling the role, which Paul Beeston will vacate after the 2015 season.

Elliott reported that the Los Angeles Angels and Boston Red Sox could also be interested in hiring Dombrowki.

Dombrowski was relieved as Tigers GM shortly after the July 31 trade deadline. In one of his final moves at the helm, he traded star left-hander David Price to the Blue Jays in exchange for a trio of pitching prospects.

He has 27 years' experience as a baseball executive, including serving as GM for the Montreal Expos (1988-91), Florida Marlins (1993-2001) and the Tigers (2002-2015). He was GM of the Marlins for the team's first ever World Series title in 1997. The Tigers have advanced to the post-season in each of the last four campaigns.

Beeston announced prior to the 2015 campaign that this season would be his last as Jays president. He began his relationship with the club in its expansion 1977 season as vice president of baseball operations and remained with the club until 1997, ascending to the role of president and CEO in 1989. He was Major League Baseball president from 1997 to 2002 but returned to the Jays in 2008, succeeding Paul Godfrey as club president and CEO once more.
