The Chicago Fire have brought aboard a striker from Toronto FC's past.

The Brazilian signed for the Reds as a designated player in December of 2013 from Internacional for a reported $3 million transfer fee, but never lived up to expectations after finding it difficult to adjust to Major League Soccer.

Gilberto, 26, made 32 appearances in all competitions last season for TFC, scoring seven times and adding five assists.

The additions of Sebastian Giovinco and Jozy Altidore in the offseason left TFC with four designated players (with captain Michael Bradley being the other), leaving the Brazilian the odd man out. He was loaned out in February to Vasco da Gama.

The Fire were rumoured to have been hot in pursuit of former Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba and held his MLS rights after filing a discovery claim, but dealt the rights to the Montreal Impact on Sunday when they were unable to come to terms on a contract with the Chelsea legend.

Chicago currently has three designated players on their roster in Scottish international Shaun Maloney, Ghana striker David Accam and forward Kennedy Igboananike.
