Artemi Panarin has reportedly set his asking price on an extension with the Chicago Blackhawks.

A source told Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune that Panarin is seeking a six-year deal with an average annual value above $6 million.

Panarin, who turns 25 next month, is entering the second season of a two-year, $6.775 million deal. He led all rookies with 30 goals and 70 points last season and won the Calder Trophy.

With Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane both owning $10.5 million cap hits and six more Blackhawks with AAVs above $4 million, the Blackhawks are not flush with cap space.

Still, general manager Stan Bowman expressed optimism to the Tribune that the two sides would reach an extension.

"I don't think it's a productive thing to negotiate through the media," Bowman told reporters on Tuesday. "Obviously, Artemi is a big part of our team. We're excited for the season he had. We're looking forward to him building on that. And then the negotiations will be what they are between his agent and myself. I respect Tom (Lynn). He's a very knowledgeable guy and I know Artemi put a lot of faith in him.

"Tom and I will work to get something done."

The Blackhawks open the season on October 12 against the St. Louis Blues.
