It appears Tom Rowe's days behind the Florida Panthers' bench are numbered.

According to the Miami Herald, Rowe will not return as head coach of the Panthers next season.

Rowe, the Panthers' general manager, took over as the team's interim head coach when Gerard Gallant was fired in November.

The team was 11-9-1 when Gallant was fired and have gone 22-26-10 under Rowe since. He said Monday he knew the blame would fall on him if the Panthers struggled after the change.

A plane towing a banner reading 'Rowe must go! Call him a cab!' flew over the Panthers' arena prior to Monday's loss to the Montreal Canadiens.

“This is part of the business,” Rowe said following Monday’s loss, per the Herald. “I knew coming here, to be part of it, if things didn’t go well I would be taking the brunt of it.

“But that’s fine. I can handle that. Fans pay great money to see us play and it’s their prerogative to speak their mind. I have no problem with that.”

Rowe relinquished his general manager responsibilities to president of hockey operations Dale Tallon when he took over as head coach. The Herald reports Rowe will be offered a front office position with the Panthers, but it's unclear if he'll keep the general manager title.

“Fans, they pay good money to watch us play and when they’re not happy ... I’m a big boy and have thick skin,” Rowe said of fans chanting for his firing. “We have a great franchise. I would tell the fans this: We have a great franchise, great players.

“It’s been a disappointing year but we’ll definitely be back in the playoffs.”

The Panthers (33-35-11) reached the playoffs with a 47-26-9 record last season, but have not won a playoff series since 1996.
