The 29-year-old Zimmermann has spent all seven years of his career with the Nationals. Twice an All-Star, the native of Auburndale, Wisconsin went 13-10 last season for the Nats in 33 starts, striking out 164 batters and conceding only 39 walks. Zimmermann had an earned-run average of 3.66 and a WHIP of 1.205.

Zimmermann joins former Cy Young Award winner and American League Most Valuable Player, Justin Verlander at the front of the Tigers' rotation.

The Tigers were 74-87 this season, last in AL Central. They missed the postseason for the first time in five years
