Andrew Hammond has turned a lot of heads with his recent play in the Ottawa Senators' net.

Having begun his NHL career with a 9-0-1 record and a sparkling .954 save percentage, the rookie netminder has been racking up accolades and commendations including being named the NHL's First Star for the week of Mar. 2.

Now, however, Hammond may be getting commendations from a higher power.

Senators head coach Dave Cameron said Sunday that he received advice to start Hammond against the Flyers on Sunday night from, of all people, his priest.

“I went to church last night and I wasn’t inside in the church and the priest comes running up to me says: 'You have to start the young fella! you have to start the young fella!” Cameron told reporters.

"'Father, thank you,' I said. 'I think I'm gonna,'" Cameron continued.

While Cameron caved for the pivotal match-up against the Flyers, he joked Sunday that listening to his priest could prove a slippery slope moving forward.

"I was just thinking if his agent gets a hold of that, imagine his negotiating power when’s God’s on his side. That might be the biggest contract in the history of Ottawa?," Cameron offered.

"I'll never go to confession again," Cameron offered. "I’ll be running right out of the church.”

Hammond's start has been historic as the 27-year-old became just the fifth goalie since 1972 to register a point in each of his first 10 starts on Friday, according to Elias Sports Bureau. He joins current Colorado Avalanche goalie Semyon Varlamov and one-time Pittsburgh Penguin (and future Senator) Patrick Lalime as the only goalies to have done so in the last 20 years.

The Senators are 8-1-1 over their last 10, the team's only regulation loss coming Tuesday to the Boston Bruins with Craig Anderson in net. Ottawa enters Sunday night's match-up 10th in the Eastern Conference, seven points back of the Washington Capitals and Boston Bruins, who are currently level in the two wild card slots. The Bruins and Capitals play each other Sunday night, while the ninth-place Florida Panthers visit the New York Rangers.
