Toronto Maple Leafs president Brendan Shanahan held an impromptu meeting with the media on Wednesday to say forward Nazem Kadri will be a healthy scratch for the next two games.

The decision was made by Shanahan, Dave Nonis and the Maple Leafs' coaching staff.

The announcement comes on the heels of Kadri sitting out Monday's game against the New York Islanders for oversleeping and missing a team meeting Sunday.

"There's a history here," Shanahan said regarding Kadri. "Incidents like this won't be tolerated."

Shanahan refused to go into details on Kadri's past.

Shanahan went on to say there have been other incidents beside Kadri being late on Sunday, saying they don't want to ignore them.

"The easiest things for us to do would be to sweep this under the rug and put it off to the off season but Naz (Nazem Kadri) is an important part of our future."

"This is a key moment in Kadri's career," Shanahan continued. "He needs to look at the mirror and decide where he wants his career to go."

When asked how he'd like to see Kadri to respond to the benching, interim head coach Peter Peter Horachek said "like a pro."

Kadri did not speak on Wednesday.
