A Wing and a Prayer?

The Detroit Red Wings are looking for reinforcements on their blue line for their stretch drive, but don't expect them to dangle any top prospects to land help. USA Today's Kevin Allen reports that trading top prospects Anthony Mantha and Dylan Larkin are nonstarters for the team currently sitting third in the Atlantic Division. Allen says that the team's first-round pick in this summer's NHL Entry Draft is also off the table.

The Wings were a long-rumoured suitor for Tyler Myers since the hulking defenceman's named came up in trade talks last year, but the Buffalo Sabres were reportedly insistent on at least one of Mantha or Larkin in any deal and negotiations between the two clubs hit a wall. The Sabres, of course, eventually dealt Myers to the Winnipeg Jets in a blockbuster earlier this month.

Allen cites the Edmonton Oilers' Jeff Petry and Zbynek Michalek of the Arizona Coyotes as potential defencemen the Red Wings could have their eye on and be able to acquire with lesser prospects.

Dogging It in the Desert

Antoine Vermette's name has churned through the rumour mill for the past several weeks and all the trade talk seems to be getting to the Arizona Coyotes veteran.

The 32-year-old has just three goals and 10 points since January 1 and that hasn't been lost on his coach.

"He knows the situation he's in -- everybody knows the situation he's in," said Dave Tippett. "He's got a family at home, wondering what his future holds. He's got a lot on his mind."

While Vermette might be the most likely Coyote to switch jerseys, FOX Sports Arizona's Craig Morgan reports that a few of his teammates could be changing zip codes, as well.

Keith Yandle has one year left on his deal past this season at a cap hit of $5.75 million. Coyotes general manager Don Malone doesn't need to deal the 27-year-old before Monday and could wait for the summer, if he chooses to move him at all, but a Yandle deal could present an attractive return.

The aforementioned Michalek, as well as pending unrestricted free agents Martin Erat and David Moss are also potential trade candidates.

Lightning Striking?

Defenceman Radko Gudas is out for the season and veteran blueliner Matt Carle isn't expected back until early March after abdominal surgery, but the Tampa Bay Lightning aren't about to mortgage the future for a quick fix.

"We've got a good group that's all coming up together," Bolts coach Jon Cooper told Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times. "That's where you have to balance — are you going to blow this up to make a run at something now, or are we going to keep growing together and add some long-term pieces? I think you're looking for pieces to the puzzle that make sense and fit. I don't think we're in a situation where we are bringing in guys to replace guys. It's more, do we have enough depth in case we get injuries? And I'm sure every GM in the league, including ours, is working their tail off to see what they can do to help the team down the stretch. But if nothing happens, I like our group."

Even if nothing comes to fruition in terms of a deal, Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman has kept his scouts busy with the Bolts' scouting department recently keeping an eye on Andrej Sekera of the Carolina Hurricanes. Petry and Michalek could also be of interest to the Lightning, who currently sit only one point adrift of the Montreal Canadiens for top spot in the Atlantic Division and the Eastern Conference lead.
