FRISCO, Texas - Michael Bradley made his 100th appearance for the United States, starting at the top of a midfield diamond and wearing the captain's arm band in the Americans' CONCACAF Gold Cup opener against Honduras on Tuesday night.

Bradley, a son of former U.S. coach Bob Bradley, becomes the 16th American male to make 100 international appearances. At 27 years, 341 days, he is the fourth-youngest American after Landon Donovan (26-96), Cobi Jones (27-239) and Marcelo Balboa (27-320).

U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann made three changes from last week's 4-0 exhibition win over Guatemala, inserting Kyle Beckerman into defensive midfield of the 4-4-2 formation in place of Mix Diskerud, Gyasi Zardes on the left midfield flank instead of Graham Zusi and Ventura Alvarado at central defender in place of Omar Gonzalez.

The Americans played their first competitive match since losing to Belgium in overtime in the second round of last year's World Cup.

Brad Guzan was in goal for the defending Gold Cup champions, with Timmy Chandler at right back, John Brooks with Alvarado in central defence, Fabian Johnson at left back, DeAndre Yedlin in right midfield, and Clint Dempsey and Jozy Altidore up front.

If the U.S. wins the Gold Cup, it would qualify for the 2017 Confederations Cup in Russia. If another nation wins, it would meet the Americans in a playoff for the Confederations Cup berth.

Honduras, a losing semifinalist in three straight Gold Cups, started in a 5-4-1, with Donis Escobar in goal; Wilmer Crisanto at right back; Maynor Figueroa, Johnny Palacios and Henry Figuero at centre back; Brayan Beckeles at left back; Mario Martínez, Bryan Acosta, Alfredo Mejia and Andy Najar in midfield; and Anthony Lozano heading the attack.
