Fasel told told TSN's Gino Reda on Tuesday that the league does not want to take money from other IIHF development programs in order to participate. The cost of sending NHL players is estimated at $10 million.

National Hockey League commissioner Gary Bettman and league representatives are set to meet with Fasel and the IIHF on Wednesday to discuss the NHL's participation in the 2018 Pyeongchang Games.

For the past five Winter Olympic Games the insurance and travel costs of NHL players have been covered by International Olympic Committee.

TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie wrote Monday that a deadline has been set for early in the new year to decide whether NHL players will take part in the 2018 games and, as of now, it "certainly looks bleak."
