LIVERPOOL, England - Liverpool eased its injury problems in defence with a loan signing from the second tier, while Jonjo Shelvey became Newcastle's second midfield recruit in two days by joining from Swansea on Tuesday.

With centre backs Martin Skrtel and Dejan Lovren injured, Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp brought in Steven Caulker from Queens Park Rangers for the rest of the season. Caulker, who played for Britain at the London Olympics, has been on loan this season at Southampton, where he made only eight appearances.

The 24-year-old Caulker joined in time to be eligible to face Arsenal at Anfield in the Premier League on Wednesday. Liverpool is eighth in the Premier League.

Shelvey moved for a reported fee of 12 million pounds ($17.3 million) after signing a 5 1/2-year deal with Newcastle, who signed Senegalese midfielder Henri Saivet from Bordeaux on Monday.

"I drove up through the night to be here, so it's been a manic 24 hours," said Shelvey, who had fallen out of favour at Swansea, "but it's all been worth it to come here and play for this great club."

Highly rated Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli signed a new contract to keep him at the club until 2021.
