The Toronto Maple Leafs have traded forward Peter Holland to the Arizona Coyotes for a conditional sixth-round draft pick in 2018.

The Maple Leafs will only receive the pick if the Coyotes either re-sign Holland or trade him prior to the draft.

Holland, 25, had been unhappy with his playing time in Toronto this season, appearing in only eight games with one assist. He and his agent Joe Resnick met with Toronto general manager Lou Lamoriello two weeks ago and Lamoriello said he would try to orchestrate a trade. Holland hasn’t been with the team since.

A native of the Toronto area, it was a dream come true for Holland to be traded to the Maple Leafs from the Anaheim Ducks in 2013. In 147 games with the club, he tallied 62 points (25 goals, 37 assists) and signed a one-year, $1.3 million contract with the Maple Leafs as a restricted free agent in July.

The emergence of Toronto’s rookie class and the acquisition of penalty-killing specialist Ben Smith in October ultimately made Holland expendable. He started the season centering the fourth line, but was bumped in favour of Smith. Holland’s last game action was Nov. 26 against the Washington Capitals, when he replaced the injured William Nylander in the lineup. He had only 12 shifts in 9:41 playing on Smith’s wing.

"Peter is a big, solid centreman with good NHL experience," said Coyotes general manager John Chayka. "We look forward to having him join our team."

With Holland gone, the Maple Leafs can activate Josh Leivo from the injured non-roster list. Leivo was dealing with an injury in training camp and early in the season, and completed a five-game conditioning stint with the AHL’s Toronto Marlies on Nov. 20.

Head coach Mike Babcock has said Leivo is recuperated, but has needed time to get back up to speed after missing so much of the Maple Leafs’ regular season.
