The Toronto Blue Jays and Major League Baseball's other 29 other teams could each be fielding an extra roster player next season.

Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports reports that league owners and the players' union - in their negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement - are discussing the expansion of rosters to 26 players from 25 in exchange for limits on September rosters.

Under the current CBA, teams can go from having a 25 players on their rosters to 40 every Sept. 1. A source told Fox Sports that the new limit would likely be 28 players and Rosenthal adds that the new rules would also permit teams to swap out players, though not on a daily basis.

The report also says the union would consider the extra roster spot for the first five months of the season as a sufficient trade-off. However, Rosenthal cites that giving the additional roster spot to a reliever would hinder commissioner Rob Manfred's wishes to speed up the pace of play in games.

The current collective bargaining agreement expires on Dec. 1.
