No Right Man?

The Edmonton Oilers are running out of options on the trade market for a right-handed defenceman.

As Jim Matheson of Edmonton Sun notes, the Oilers crossed another option off the board when Sami Vatanen signed a four-year extension with the Ducks on Saturday.

Matheson adds the Colorado Avalanche have announced their intentions to keep Tyson Barrie and the Carolina Hurricanes have no reason to trade Justin Faulk.

The Oilers could target right-handed shot Zach Bogosian of the Buffalo Sabres, but Matheson believes his $5.14 million cap hit is too high for the Oilers. Still, the Sun believes the two teams could become trade partners ahead of Friday’s NHL Draft as the Sabres covet London Knights forward Matthew Tkachuk, who likely won’t be available at the Sabres current spot (eighth overall).

Matheson suggests the Sabres could trade Tyler Ennis, Zemgus Girgensons and/or defenceman Mark Pysyk along with the No. 8 pick to move into the Oilers’ fourth slot.

Price of the Pick

The Columbus Blue Jackets general manager Jarmo Kekalainen has received two “really good offers, aggressive offers, fair offers” for the third overall pick this week, however neither have been enough to warrant a trade.

Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch reports the price for the pick is likely a high-powered centre to help replace Ryan Johansen. However, Portzline adds that the salary of such a player would likely force the cash-strapped Blue Jackets to shed salary of their own.

Scott Hartnell leads the list of players the Blue Jackets could look to move to free cap space space, while Jared Boll and Fedor Tyutin could receive buyouts.

Ahead of the Storm?

The Anaheim Ducks are among the few teams with the luxury of having two starter-worthy goaltenders. However, with a possible expansion draft looming next year, the Ducks may have to choose to trade one of those netminders rather than risk losing one for nothing.

As Eric Stephens of the Orange County Register writes, Ducks general Bob Murray has already thought of the possibility as he enters negotiations with pending restricted free agent Frederik Andersen.

"If I can get Freddie signed one way or the other, I’ve got to move one because I’ll lose one for sure in expansion," Murray told the Register. "It just will happen. It’s just something that’s in front of us. It’s there. We have a lot of defensemen.

"So we have to turn some of these things into assets."

Fellow Ducks goaltender John Gibson is under contract for the next three seasons at an affordable $2.3 million cap hit. Gibson, 22, and Andersen, 26, could both be targets for an expansion team looking to start their franchise with a young goaltender.
