SAN PEDRO SULA, Honduras - Damaso Santos scored in the ninth minute as Panama edge Canada 1-0 on Thursday in the last match of group play at the CONCACAF under-17 championships.

It was the first loss of the tournament for Canada, which finished second behind Mexico in Group B.

Canada had two quality chances early but couldn't capitalize, and the Canadians had an equalizing goal called back for an apparent handball.

"We're at the part of the tournament where we have some tired legs and some tired minds," said Canadian head coach Sean Fleming.

Canada plays Costa Rica on Sunday for a spot in the FIFA under-17 World Cup.

Canada could have advanced directly with a win after Costa Rica tied Mexico earlier in the day. Instead, Mexico automatically advances with its first-place finish in the group standings.

"We're going to have to dig really deep down for Sunday to make sure that we are at our best as we can both mentally and physically," Fleming said.
