The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed defenceman Sergei Gonchar to a professional tryout contract.

Gonchar, 41, scored one goal and 13 assists in 48 games with the Montreal Canadiens last season.

Originally selected 14th overall at the 1992 NHL Entry Draft by the Washington Capitals, the Russian defender has scored 220 goals and 591 assists in 1,301 career NHL games with the Capitals, Canadiens, Penguins, Ottawa Senators and Dallas Stars.

He won the Stanley Cup in 2009 during his previous tenure with the Penguins.

Named to the NHL Second All-Star Team in 2001-02 and 2002-03, Gonchar is the NHL's active points leader among defencemen and is fifth amongst all active NHLers in games-played.

He has represented Russia on numerous occasions internationally, including four Olympic Games, winning silver at Nagano 1998 and bronze at Salt Lake City 2002. He also won a silver (2010) and bronze (2007) medal at the IIHF World Championships in addition to participating in the 1996 and 2004 World Cups of Hockey.
