The New York Rangers will be without the services of centre Derek Stepan indefinitely with a fracture in his left fibula.

Stepan, 24, incurred the injury during a conditioning drill on Wednesday morning.

The Hastings, Minnesota native had to be helped off the ice.

He was already nursing a foot injury that kept him out of Monday night's 5-4 loss to the New Jersey Devils.

Stepan was the Rangers' second-leading scorer last season, posting 17 goals and 40 assistsin all 82 games. He also chipped in five goals and 10 assists in the Rangers' run to the Stanley Cup Final.

There is no timetable set for his return.
