The Montreal Canadiens sent forward Alexander Semin to the St. John's IceCaps of the American Hockey League on Tuesday after clearing waivers.

The 31-year-old Russian has just one goal and three assists over 15 games with the Habs this season.

Semin signed a one-year, $1.1 million contract with the Canadiens this summer after the Carolina Hurricanes bought out the final three years of his five-year, $35 million deal.

Semin, who once scored 40 goals in the 2009-10 season with the Washington Capitals, was a healthy scratch for a handful of games for the first-place Canadiens.
