SOUTHAMPTON, England - Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster will miss the rest of the season after undergoing surgery on his left knee.

The England international fell awkwardly after making a clearance in Southampton's Premier League match against Burnley on Saturday and was carried off on a stretcher. Scans showed damage to Forster's patellar tendon.

Southampton says Wednesday that a longer-term prognosis of when Forster will return to action will be made following further assessment once the effects of his operation have settled down. A typical time-frame for this type of injury is between nine months and a year.

Forster has been one of Southampton's top players in his first season at the club following a summer move from Scottish champion Celtic.

Southampton is sixth in the league and in contention for Champions League qualification.
