LISBON, Portugal — Teenage midfielder Renato Sanches was chosen in the Portugal squad for the European Championship on Tuesday.

The 18-year-old Sanches, who is moving from Benfica to Bayern Munich, has two caps but his standout performances in the Portuguese league earned him a place in the squad that also includes Cristiano Ronaldo.

Sanches received a spot after Monaco midfielder Bernardo Silva was injured last weekend. Striker Danny and left back Fabio Coentrao were unavailable with long-term injuries.

Portugal will be in Group F at Euro 2016 along with Austria, Hungary and Iceland.

The squad is due to gather in Lisbon on Monday, and play friendlies against Norway, England, and Estonia before leaving for France on June 9.

Despite producing some of Europe's top players, Portugal has never won any silverware. It was the losing finalist at Euro 2004 on home turf.
