The NHL's Feb. 29 Trade Deadline is approaching and teams are making decisions on whether to buy or sell and decide which players can make the biggest difference and hold the greatest value. Check out today's trade rumours and speculation from around the NHL beat.

Searching for clues

While his players (save for Steven Stamkos and Ben Bishop) will be relaxing over All-Star weekend, Tampa Bay Lightning GM Steve Yzerman will be doing some minor league scouting. And where he ends up could be a clue to where he ultimately trades his own disgruntled prospect, Jonathan Drouin.

Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times reasons that Yzerman's destinations in the coming days could be very telling since he is actively trying to trade Drouin. Smith also said that Drouin could be a valuable trade chip to improve the current team, who sit second in the Atlantic Division at the All-Star break, rather than improve the team's prospect pool.

Smith added that he doesn't believe Stamkos will be a factor at this year's Trade Deadline because the Lightning are in the hunt and because Yzerman has said there is no deadline on extension talks with the star forward.

Rielly untouchable?

The Toronto Maple Leafs don't have much untouchable players on their roster leading up to next month's Trade Deadline, but it was generally perceived Morgan Rielly was one of them, maybe the only one.

But Rielly said he doesn't put much merit into the "untouchable" tag given to him by outside sources. According to Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun, Rielly doesn't necessarily agree with the untouchable label.

“I don’t know if that’s true and I don’t put a whole lot of merit into what I hear from outside sources,” Rielly told the Sun.

Despite Rielly's hesitations, the Sun considers it very unlikely Leafs GM Lou Lamoriello will move the young defenceman.

Likely destinations

If the Winnipeg Jets ultimately decide to trade Andrew Ladd before the Trade Deadline, they figure to have plenty of suitors for the veteran left winger's services.

Matt Larkin of The Hockey News lists five teams that would be ideal landing places for Ladd including the Anaheim Ducks, Boston Bruins, Florida Panthers, Montreal Canadiens, and Nashville Predators.

Larkin said it will likely cost one of these teams a first-round draft pick and a prospect. He also mentioned the Chicago Blackhawks, Ottawa Senators, and New York Rangers as potential suitors. Word out of Florida is that the Panthers won't be in on the winger.
