Harrison, NJ  - Bradley Wright-Phillips scored a first- half goal and added an assist on Sunday as the New York Red Bulls opened the home portion of their schedule with a 2-0 win over D.C. United at Red Bull Arena in the latest installment of the Atlantic Cup.

Wright-Phillips had a breakout season last term, scoring 27 goals to tie Roy Lassiter's single-season record for goals scored, and the England native was primed and ready to open his 2015 account on Sunday in front of the home fans.

New York struck for the opener in the 25th minute when Wright-Phillips did quite well to take down a long ball over the top from Dax McCarty with two DC defender one him. Wright-Phillips took a quick touch to give himself some space and time before ripping a low strike into the bottom left corner.

The home side doubled the lead in the 71st minute with Wright-Phillips playing provider as he collected the ball in the attacking half following a United turnover and set sail toward goal.

He slid the ball to the right wing for Sam, who looked up and smashed it past United goalkeeper Bill Hamid for his second goal of the season.

United had a chance to pull one back in stoppage time when Davy Arnaud was pulled down in the box and awarded a penalty kick by referee Alan Kelly, but Chris Pontius blasted the kick well over the crossbar.

New York was able to see out three minutes of stoppage time to give new head coach Jesse Marsch his first win, while New York has not lost a home opener since 2003.
