Bob Weeks Picks Six – WGC Dell Technologies Match Play

Jason Day Wells Fargo Jason Day - The Canadian Press
Published

This week, we say farewell to the match play format on the PGA Tour (for now, anyway) as well as the World Golf Championships. It’s the last time for both taking place at the Austin Country Club in Texas. Scottie Scheffler is the defending champion and doesn’t seem to have lost his stride since he knocked off Kevin Kisner in the final. With the different format, I’ve strayed from my typical Pick 6 format offerings to give you some different wagers to consider.

Winner

Scottie Scheffler +800

The obvious favourite, Scheffler not only won this last year but was runner-up to Billy Horschel in 2021. What else? Well, he’s won twice this year and is the No.-1 ranked golfer in the world. HI Ryder Cup match play mark is pretty solid too. He went 2-0-1 in 2021 and knocked off Jon Rahm in the singles.

Dark Horse

Jason Day +2400

Back before he had to deal with a bad back, Day won this event twice over a three-year period. This year, he’s shown a return to form. He’s been inside the top 20 in last seven starts, five of which were top-10s. If there’s a player who loves the grind, it’s Day who will go as far as his back will let him.

Best Canadian

Nick Taylor +14000

Normally, this would be the perfect spot to plug in the smooth-swinging Corey Conners and his radar-like tee and approach shots. But his game has not be up to its usual high standards. So we’ll go with Taylor who has been the best Canadian of late, coming off a top-10 finish at the Valspar. Taylor won the 2007 Canadian Amateur in match play and fared well in events using that format as an amateur. It’s been a while since he’s competed in that format but it won’t take long to shake off the rust.

Best Upset Possibility

Ben Griffin +17000

Griffin has played some solid and at times, spectacular golf. Has only missed one cut in his last 14 events and has put in some excellent rounds, just not always four in a row. What I like about him is his ability to make birdies – he leads the PGA Tour in total birdies with 238. He’s in a group with Russell Henley, Lucas Herbert and Tyrrell Hatton.

Stay Away From

Kevin Kisner

We love The Kiz and his record at this tournament is tremendous. He’s been in the final three of the last four years, winning it all in 2019. That makes him an attractive pick. But his recent form hasn’t been very good. He’s made one cut in his last five starts and that ended up as a 75th-played finish. He’s 197th in Strokes Gained: Total and on the negative side of all six major categories. It doesn’t appear to be his year.

Value Pick

Tommy Fleetwood +3700

Playing in a group with Sunjae Im, J.T. Poston and Maverick McNealy, Fleetwood is coming off a tie for third at the Valspar. He’s game has been getting stronger as the season progresses. He’s a great putter, sitting fourth in putting average on the PGA Tour, and putting goes a long way in match play. Has played well in past Ryder Cup appearances
