2014 NFL Coaching Hot Seats

With the NFL season more than halfway over, many head coaches find themselves coaching with their job on the line after disappointing starts to the season. Leading up to "Black Monday," which annually follows Week 17 of the season, TSN.ca tracks the coaches who are on the hot seat, and those who may soon be.

With the 2014 season concluded, many head coaches find themselves with their job on the line after disappointing seasons. Leading up to "Black Monday," which annually follows Week 17 of the season, TSN.ca tracks the coaches who are on the hot seat, and those who may soon be with the categories of Heating Up, Not Safe and In the Clear. Coaches on the hot seat are the most likely to be fired, while not safe coaches are unlikely to be fired, but could justifiably be handed a pink slip when the season closes. In the Clear coaches have received public guarantees they will return to their respective teams in 2015.

Tony Sparano (Interim)

Oakland Raiders

  • 2014 Record
    3-13
  • Coach Since
    Week 5
  • Career Record
    32-41*
  • Super Bowl Wins
    0

Sparano was able to coach the Raiders to their only wins of 2014 after taking over for Dennis Allen mid-season, but the loss of his interim title would be surprising. The Raiders will likely look for a change for the 2015 season.

Not Safe

Gus Bradley
Gus Bradley

Jacksonville Jaguars

  • 2014 Record
    3-13
  • Coach Since
    2013
  • Career Record
    7-25
  • Super Bowl Wins
    0
By many accounts Bradley is safe in his job and will return in 2015 for his third year with the Jaguars. Yet, it's hard to believe the Jaguars would not at least consider a change after the team regressed from their 4-12 mark last season. More likely than not, however, the Jaguars will stick with Bradley as their franchise coach, look for Blake Bortles to emerge as their franchise quarterback, and hope to become competitive in the near future.
Lovie Smith
Lovie Smith

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

  • 2014 Record
    2-14
  • Coach Since
    2014
  • Career Record
    83-77*
  • Super Bowl Wins
    0

Smith's job is likely safe given the fact he only ended his first season with the team, but falling back from the team's 4-12 mark in 2013 is unsettling for a team that overhauled their roster in the offseason. If Smith survives the season, the future could be bright in Tampa Bay with Mike Evans emerging as a star at wide receiver and the top draft pick coming April, which should be used on a quarterback.

*- Includes 81-63 record with the Chicago Bears from 2004-2012.

In the Clear

Ken Whisenhunt

Tennessee Titans

  • 2014 Record

  • Coach Since
    2014
  • Career Record

    6-10
  • Coach Since
    2004
  • Career Record
    164-140*
  • Super Bowl Wins
    2

The Giants missed the playoffs for a third consecutive year in 2014 and Coughlin was thought to be the biggest name fired at the end of the season. Although multiple reports on the Monday following the season said that the Giants would bring the coach back for the 2015 season. Coughlin has won two Vince Lombardi trophies with the team, but has never had a playoff drought longer than two years.

*Includes 68-60 record with the Jacksonville Jaguars from 1995-2002.

Jay Gruden
Jay Gruden

  • 2014 Record
    3-12
  • Coach Since
    2014
  • Career Record
    3-12
  • Super Bowl Wins

Though there was not much doubt, Redskins ownership has reportedly informed Gruden he will return as head coach next season. The future of Robert Griffin III is much more up in the air.
Joe Philbin

  • 2014 Record
    8-8
  • Coach Since
    2012
  • Career Record
    23-25
  • Super Bowl Wins
    0

Philbin's time with the Dolphins has been filled with disappointments and mishandled situations. Last year, under Philbin's watch, the Dolphins had an embarrassing bullying scandal that tore up the locker room. Even despite the scandal, the Dolphins had a chance to reach the playoffs but lost their final two games of the season to finish at 8-8. This year, Philbin refused to stand behind quarterback Ryan Tannehill after the team fell to 1-2 and openly considered benching the third-year pro, a situation he later apologized to the team for. Despite the off-field drama, the Dolphins announced after Week 16 Philbin would return in 2015.

The Chicago Bears cleaned house Monday morning, firing both head coach Marc Trestman and general manager Phil Emery. Trestman's pink slip comes after a tumultuous second season with the Bears, which included benching quarterback Jay Cutler and the distraction of negative media-leaked comments by offensive coordinator Aaron Kromer.
