Net Result: Canada's Milos Raonic advanced to the semifinals at the Australian Open with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Gael Monfils. He will face Andy Murray on Friday (Thursday night in Canada). Angelique Kerber and Johanna Konta advanced to the women's semifinal.
Tough Times: The Montreal Canadiens dropped both ends of a home-and-home set with the Columbus Blue Jackets, losing 5-2 last night at the Bell Centre. The Habs limp into the All-Star break having lost seven of eight games. The Toronto Maple Leafs dropped a 5-1 decision to the Florida Panthers while the Buffalo Sabres beat the Ottawa Senators, 3-2.
The Hot Hand: In Winnipeg, rookie Nikolaj Ehlers scored a hat trick and Dustin Byfuglien scored twice as the Jets beat the Arizona Coyotes 5-2. And in Vancouver, James Neal scored the winner with less than five minutes left to send the Predators past the Canucks, 2-1.
Can't Be Stopped: The Toronto Raptors tied a franchise record with their ninth straight win in a 106-89 decision over the Washington Wizards. Kyle Lowry led the team with 29 points but left late in the fourth quarter with an apparent injury to his left hand. X-Rays after the game came back negative.
