NFL Combine: Do top performers pan out?

While some teams may treat it as such, the NFL Combine isn't the grand measurer of prospects. Teams are generally looking for well-rounded prospects but some still can't help but be enticed by a top performer. Check out the best results from the past 10 years in each combine event and how those players turned out as pros.

While some teams may treat it as such, the NFL Combine isn't the grand measurer of prospects. Teams are generally looking for well-rounded prospects, or looking for the Combine to weed out players that don't possess NFL measurables. Still, some can't help but be enticed by a top performer. Below are the best results from the past 10 years in each combine event and how those players turned out as pros.

Chris Johnson
40-Yard Dash

Players are timed at 10, 20, and 40-yard intervals

Top Performers

  • Chris Johnson
    4.24
  • Dri Archer
    4.26
  • M. Goodwin
    4.27
  • Jacoby Ford
    4.28
  • D. Van Dyke
    4.28
This list proves faster isn't always better. While CJ2K had a great start to his career, rushing for more than 2,000 yards and 14 touchdowns his sophomore campaign, he hasn't sustained that success and spent last year as just a part-time player. While the jury is still out on Dri Archer and Marquise Goodwin, neither has looked particularly promising in their short careers to date, and both Jacoby Ford and DeMarcus Van Dyke - Raiders draft picks (surprise!) - were out of the league last year.
Stephen Paea
Bench Press

Players record as many reps at 225lbs as they can

Top Performers

  • Stephen Paea
    49
  • Mitch Petrus
    45
  • Jeff Owens
    44
  • Dontari Poe
    44
  • Russell Bodine
    42
Poe is the headliner of this group, notching 135 tackles and 10.5 sacks in his three years at defensive tackle for the Chiefs, but Paea has had a solid career so far as well for the Bears (94 tackles, 12 sacks). The jury is still out on offensive guard Bodine after his first year with the Bengals, while neither Petrus or Owens worked out. Stength is imperative in the trenches, so the Bench Press is an important barometer for linemen.
Eric Berry
Vertical Jump

Players stand flat-footed and have their vertical reach measured

Top Performers

  • D. Washington
    45
  • A.J. Jefferson
    44
  • D. Dickerson
    43.5
  • Kashif Moore
    43.5
  • Eric Berry
    43
An important drill for receivers but three of the top five performers are defensive backs, including the top two. Eric Berry is the only player from the group however to have made any real impact at the pro level. The former first-overall draft pick was a legitimate star at his safety position before being diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphona last season.
Julio Jones
Broad Jump

Players start with balanced stance, then jump forward as far as they can

Top Performers

  • Jamie Collins
    11'7
  • Justin Hunter
    11'4
  • J. Simpson
    11'4
  • Julio Jones
    11'3
  • D. Washington
    11'3
This list has some star power, of course headlined by Julio Jones, but also including some noteworthy receivers in Jerome Simpson and Justin Hunter as well. Those three have more than 7,000 career receiving yards combined and at least a couple highlight reel plays. Jamie Collins is quickly becoming a star for the Patriots, proving this drill isn't just for the receivers, but a case could be made the broad jump is as important as the vertical jump for pass catchers.
Jeffrey Maehl
Three Cone Drill

Players are timed running and changing directions around cones

Top Performers

  • Jeffrey Maehl
    6.42
  • Buster Skrine
    6.44
  • Scott Long
    6.45
  • D.Sanzenbacher
    6.46
  • D. Sorensen
    6.47
Not a lot of star power from the three-cone drill. Buster Skrine is the only top performer to have been drafted however Maehl, Sanzenbacher, and Sorensen are all still in the league, enjoying careers of at least a couple seasons. This drill is important for receivers and defensive backs but clearly doesn't guarantee success.
Desmond Trufant
20-Yard Shuttle

Players are timed running a five-yard/10-yard/five-yard shuttle

Top Performers

  • Jason Allen
    3.81
  • Brandin Cooks
    3.81
  • B.W. Webb
    3.84
  • D. Trufant
    3.85
  • Austin Pettis
    3.88
The 20-yard shuttle produced some more recognizable names. Jason Allen enjoyed an eight-year career while Brandin Cooks is just beginning what looks like a promising one in New Orleans. Both were first round picks. Webb, Trufant, and Pettis are all still in the league as well, with Trufant, a first rounder as well, and Pettis both impact players for their teams. Another big drill for receivers and defensive backs, this one appears more important to score well on.
Brandin Cooks
60-Yard Shuffle

Similar to the 20-yard shuttle, players are timed running 60-yards

Top Performers

  • Brandin Cooks
    10.72
  • Jamell Fleming
    10.75
  • Buster Skrine
    10.75
  • D. Sorensen
    10.80
  • D. Copeland
    10.84
Cooks makes the list once again, this time up one spot to No. 1. Skrine and Sorensen are also on their second list of Top Performers. Jamell Fleming is also a current NFLer, making it 4/5 for the 60-yard shuttle, one of the higher success rates among drills.
