The relationship between Sergio Ramos and Real Madrid continues to sour.
The Guardian's Sid Lowe reports that the Spanish international has informed Los Blancos of his intention to join Manchester United. The 29-year-old defender has two years remaining on his current contract.
Ramos was told on Monday that United tabled an official bid for the player, believed to be in the range of £28.5 million. United had a first bid rejected by Real last week.
In a meeting with club executives, Ramos indicated his desire to move on from the club he's spent the past 10 seasons with after coming over from Valencia. What could be telling about the meeting is that the club didn't stick to its normal script when it comes to transfer negotiations and announce that United would have to meet the player's buyout clause of €180 million in order to get Ramos to leave. Negotiations are further complicated by the fact that Real is looking to buy Spanish international 'keeper David De Gea during this transfer window and any row with United could place the move - one De Gea is believed to want - in jeopardy.
With Real, Ramos has won La Liga three times. His stoppage-time goal in last year's Champions League final against Atletico Madrid forced extra time where Los Blancos would score three more times for a 4-1 win and La Decima - the club's 10th European title.
In unrelated transfer dealings, United is expected to complete the signing of France international midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin this week from Southampton. The fee is believed to be in the range of £24 million with the player having agreed to a four-year contract.
Saints manager Ronald Koeman said on Monday that there was no formal bid from United to his knowledge, but the situation was fluid.
"We have the situation with Morgan Schneiderlin, we will have to wait what will happen," Koeman said. "Until now, we have not a serious bid for him from Man United. We will wait, but okay. That’s business that normally starts from now."
The 25-year-old Schneiderlin is viewed by Louis van Gaal's Red Devils as a long-term successor to Michael Carrick.
