In a move that's been expected since the Brock Osweiler signing, the Houston Texans are heading for a split with Brian Hoyer, according to a report from the NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Hoyer started nine regular season games for the Texans last year and their lone playoff game. While the 30-year-old was serviceable behind centre, the Texans made upgrading at the position a priority this off-season.

Hoyer's fate with the team was likely sealed when he finished 15-34 with four interceptions in Houston's Wild Card Round loss to the Chiefs.

If Hoyer is released, he will join Ryan Fitzpatrick as the top two remaining free agent quarterbacks.
