The Montreal Alouettes have selected offensive lineman Tyler Johnstone in the supplemental draft, forfeiting their first round pick in the 2019 CFL draft, the team announced Monday.

The 25-year-old starred at the University of Oregon following his high school career in Arizona.

The six-foot-six, 275-pound Johnstone attended the 2016 NFL combine and was bypassed in the draft before signing as an undrafted free agent with the Los Angeles Chargers. But a stress fracture landed him on injured reserve for the year before reaching an injury settlement with the club.

"We are thrilled to have acquired Tyler's rights," said Alouettes general manager Kavis Reed.

"Tyler was one of the best national offensive linemen available this year and he would have been next year as well."

Johnstone was on the Calgary Stampeders' negotiation list and nearly reported to the team, but because his father, Kevin, was born in the city, Tyler Johnstone was eligible for Canadian citizenship.

After missing the cutoff date for the 2018 CFL draft, Johnstone became eligible for the supplemental draft.
