The Colorado Avalanche have signed defenseman Ian Cole to a three-year, $12.75 million contract.

Cole, 29, scored five goals and 15 assists over 67 games this season split between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Columbus Blue Jackets. He also added three helpers during the Blue Jackets’ postseason run.

The Penguins traded Cole to the Ottawa Senators in late February along with a number of other assets for a 2018 third-round draft pick, prospect Vincent Dunn and Derick Brassard. However, before joining the Sens on the ice, Cole was traded to the Blue Jackets in exchange for Nick Moutrey and a 2020 third-round pick.

The American won two back-to-back Stanley Cups during his time with the Pens and put up a career-high 26 points with them in 2016-2017.

The 18th overall pick of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft (St. Louis Blues), Cole has a combined 20 goals, 77 assists and 97 points over 405 games with St. Louis, Pittsburgh and Columbus.

Cole is coming off a three-year, $6.3 million contract that he signed with the Pens in June 2015.
