Brock Boeser's rookie season is likely over after the Vancouver Canucks forward was diagnosed with a soft tissue injury and a small non-structural, non-displaced fracture of the transverse process in his lower back.

Boeser has been given a four-to-six week timeline for recovery, and the Canucks wrap up their season on April 7.

His rookie totals are likely to stand at 29 goals and 26 assists in 62 games. He currently sits second among rookies in points and first in goals - with a seven-goal cushion on Kyle Connor of the Winnipeg Jets.

The 21-year-old was injured in the third period of the team's 4-3 overtime win over the New York Islanders Monday.

Late in the third period Boeser attempted to hip check Islanders forward Cal Clutterbuck but got the worst of it and flew into the boards with the bench door open. The rookie was down for a couple of minutes before getting helped off the ice. Boeser didn't put any weight on his right side.

Boeser was taken to the hospital on a stretcher after the game, with Canucks head coach Travis Green saying it was for precautionary reasons. The team added on Tuesday Boeser was resting at home within a few hours of the game ending.

"You are always concerned no matter what when a player is injured," said Green after the game. "I don't want to make a comment on it. I hope he's all right. I think our guys feel like it's a bruise."

Boeser leads the Canucks in both goals and points this season and sits second among forwards with an average of 17:29 of ice time per game. He represented the team at the 2018 NHL All-Star game in January.
