The NHL's Department of Player Safety suspended New Jersey Devils forward Kurtis Gabriel one game on Saturday for boarding Nolan Patrick of the Philadelphia Flyers during Friday night's 6-3 loss.

After Patrick tripped Michael McLeod near the boards during the first period, Gabriel came in with a hit from behind into the boards. He was given a five-minute penalty on the play, but did not receive a game misconduct.

A native of Newmarket, Ont., Gabriel is in his third NHL season and first with the Devils.

In 14 games this season, he has two goals and an assist. He appeared in 16 contests over the past two seasons with the Minnesota Wild.
