After an MRI revealed that Marco Estrada has a mild left glute strain the Toronto Blue Jays called up two relievers, selecting the contracts of Luis Santos and Rhiner Cruz on Wednesday. The team will see how Estrada progresses, but according to TSN's Scott Mitchell, haven't ruled out a stint on the disabled list.
To make room for Santos and Cruz, Preston Guilmet has been designated for assignment and Tim Mayza has been optioned to Triple-A Buffalo.
Santos has already made one appearance with the Jays this season, surrendering six runs in an inning and two-thirds.
He also appeared with the team 10 times in 2017 and pitched to a 2.70 ERA over 16.2 innings with 16 strikeouts.
Cruz has not pitched in the majors since 2013, when he saw action in 20 games with the Houston Astros and finished with an 0-2 record and 3.38 ERA.
Guilmet appeared six times for the Jays and gave up 11 hits and eight runs over eight innings.
Both Guilmet and Mayza appeared for the Jays on Tuesday, as they were forced to use seven pitchers out of the pen because starter Marco Estrada was removed from the game with injury after recording just one out.
