Defenceman Niklas Hjalmarsson and the Arizona Coyotes have agreed to a two-year contract extension worth $10 million, according to TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun.

Hjalmarsson was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2018-19 season.

Hjalmarsson, 31, joined the Coyotes via a trade from the Chicago Blackhawks last summer and scored one goal and added eight assists in 48 games during his first season with the team.

A three-time Stanley Cup champion, Hjalmarsson was entering the final season of his current contract with a $4.1 million cap hit. Morgan said it's not yet known what the Swedish defenceman will make on his new deal.
