A candidate has emerged in the Carolina Hurricanes search for a general manager.

TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun reports the Huricanes have reached out the Los Angeles Kings for permission to interview assistant general manager Mike Futa.

Futa was promoted to the role of assistant general manager last April. Prior to that, Futa spent three seasons as the team's vice president of hockey operations and director of player personnel. Futa is in his 11th season with the Kings, having joined the franchise as their director of amateur scouting in 2007.

The 50-year-old served as assistant coach and assistant general manager of the OHL's Owen Sound Attack prior to joining the Kings. He worked in coaching and/or management in the OHL from 1997-2007.

The Hurricanes general manager position opened this week when Ron Francis was removed from the office and named president of hockey operations.
