The Luke Walton era in Los Angeles is over.

The Lakers announced on Friday that the team and their head coach have parted ways after three seasons.

"We would like to thank Luke for his dedicated service over the last three years," general manager Rob Pelinka said in a statement. "We wish Luke and his family the best of luck moving forward."

Walton finishes his tenure with a 98-148 record.

"This franchise and the city will always be special to me and my family," Walton said in a statement.

The team did not make the playoffs in any of the three seasons.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reports that former Lakers player and Cleveland Cavaliers coach Ty Lue and Philadelphia 76ers assistant coach Monty Williams have emerged as central candidates for the vacancy.

And Walton might not be out of work for very long.

The Athletic's Sam Amick reports that the Sacramento Kings will reach out to Walton. Walton is the first choice of general manager Vlade Divac. The pair were teammates on the Lakers.

The Kings fired head coach Dave Joerger on Thursday.
