A Netflix documentary on the career and controversy of former NBA referee Tim Donaghy is in the works, according to Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News.

In what was perhaps the largest gambling scandal in sports since the 1919 “Black Sox,” the 13-year veteran referee became infamously known for fixing and betting on NBA games. He resigned when his gambling arrangements were unearthed in an FBI investigation that led to him being sentenced to 15 years in prison.

While he admitted to gambling and taking money in exchange for betting tips, Donaghy also provided information of widespread misconduct and corruption by the NBA, stating that the league had instructed him to manipulate certain game outcomes with his officiating and call fewer technical fouls on star players.

The upcoming documentary won’t be the first time the controversy was explored in depth. Donaghy gave a first-person account of his actions in his 2009 memoir, titled Personal Foul.

The 2019 film, Inside Game also took a deep dive into the scandal and its ties to organized crime.

Donaghy himself will also reportedly be involved in the documentary. More recently, he appeared in Netflix’s Untold: Malice at the Palace, a documentary that explores the titular brawl that occurred between fans and NBA players in 2004.

No more details on the Tim Donaghy documentary, including the release date, have been released.
