TORONTO - Plymouth Whalers defenceman Gianluca Curcuruto was handed a 12-game suspension by the Ontario Hockey League on Tuesday for delivering an illegal check to the head.

Curcuruto hit Ottawa forward Travis Konecny with a blindside hit during last Sunday's game against the 67's.

The OHL also handed Plymouth's Mitch Jones an eight-game ban for a similar infraction during a game against Kingston two days earlier.

Cory Genovese of the Erie Otters was given a four-game suspension for checking an opponent from behind in last Friday's game against the Sudbury Wolves.
