The protracted saga over whether or not Antonio Conte will stay at Stamford Bridge appears to be over.

Sky Sports reports that Chelsea has fired the Italian manager only one season removed from a Premier League title and on the heels of an FA Cup win.

Chelsea finished fifth in the table, five points behind Liverpool for the final Champions League spot.

Former Napoli manager Maurizio Sarri appears to be in the pole position to take over the job with an announcement coming as soon as later on Thursday.

Conte, 38, joined Chelsea in August of 2016 after two years in charge of the Azzurri. Conte led Italy to a quarterfinals appearance in Euro 2016.

In his first season in charge, Chelsea set a wins record with 30, finishing atop the Premier League table, comfortably ahead of Tottenham Hotspur in second place. A native of Lecce, Conte signed a two-year extension in August of 2017.

This past season, Chelsea struggled mightily, including a stretch from January to April that saw the Blues drop five of seven matches that took them out of Champions League contention. They defeated Manchester United 1-0 in the FA Cup Final in May, winning the competition for the eighth time.

Chelsea has yet to make a signing during this offseason transfer period.

Prior to arriving at Chelsea, Conte managed for eight seasons in Serie A, including guiding Juventus to three straight Scudetti from 2012 to 2014.

A midfielder in his playing days, Conte spent 13 seasons at Juve, winning five Scudetti and the 1996 Champions League title.
