The New York Islanders will try to re-sign pending unrestricted free agent Anders Lee, according to a report from Newsday.

“As I’ve said all along, we’re going to do everything we possibly can to keep him,” Islanders general manager Lou Lamoriello said after the season.

Lee took over as team captain for John Tavares last season and helped the Islanders earn a surprise playoff berth before upsetting the Pittsburgh Penguins in the first round.

The 28-year-old finished with 28 goals and 23 assists in 82 regular season games, and another goal and three assists in eight playoff games.

Islanders head coach Barry Trotz also praised Lee after the season.

“He was fantastic as a captain," Trotz said, per the Newsday report. "He had really big shoes to fill. I think he was a natural at it because he does things the right way. He thinks of himself last rather than first and that’s what good captains do.”

The 2009 sixth-round pick has spent his entire career with the Islanders.
