Duron Carter's next assignment could be at SAM linebacker for the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Roughriders head coach Chris Jones said after practice Wednesday either Carter or Matt Elam are in line to replace Derek Moncrief at SAM linebacker Saturday against the Calgary Stampeders.

“If you watch closely he’s been at SAM before," Jones said. "He’s played at two weak, he’s played at three strong, we’re matching up on people so it’ll be interesting to see where he ends up.”

SAM linebacker is more of a sixth defensive back than a traditional linebacker in the CFL so Carter will still see plenty of time covering receivers.

Carter said after practice he enjoyed playing the position.

“It’s a little different being up closer in the box, I like it," Carter said. "I’m closer to the QB, I get to read more with my eyes, I have a little more responsibility now and that’s good to see. I’m just going out there trying to play hard and whatever coach Jones asks me to do I’ll be there.”
