The Buffalo Sabres placed forward Matt Moulson on waivers for the purpose of assignment to the AHL.

If Moulson clears waivers, he will be assigned to the Sabres' affiliate, the Rochester Americans.

According to TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger, the Sabres tried to find a trade partner to take Moulson and were willing to eat some of his salary, but no deal was found.

In 14 games for the Sabres this season, Moulson has zero points.

"We talked quite a bit throughout the last two weeks," Sabres head coach Phil Housley told the Buffalo News Monday. "Just the direction that our team's going, we have to make roster spots and try to push some other buttons and try to get some internal competition within our team.

"It's tough as a coach to make a decision like that, to let a good person go. But under the circumstances that we're in, I'm sure there's going to be a lot of guys affected with the decision, maybe emotionally, maybe it's motivationally."

The 34-year-old is making $5 million for the Sabres this season and still has one year remaining on a five-year, $25 million deal he signed with the team ahead of the 2014-15 season.
