Zach LaVine’s sneaker free agency has come to an end as New Balance announced it has signed on the Chicago Bulls All-Star guard as one of their featured athletes.
“New Balance is a brand that’s investing in me not just as a player but as an individual. I wanted to partner with a company that is equally passionate about supporting my interests beyond the court,” said LaVine in a statement. “New Balance’s creativity is making waves across hoops and I’m excited to join a roster of athletes that aren’t afraid to approach the game in their own way.”
LaVine previously signed a four-year deal with adidas back in 2017. At the time, ESPN’s Nick DePaula reported that Nike had the ability to match the $35 million dollar offer, but chose to waive its match clause that allowed LaVine to join adidas.
When his contract with adidas expired, LaVine went back to wearing Nike shoes during the 2021-2022 NBA preseason, but was seen sporting the New Balance TWO WXY on the court during All-Star Weekend.
New Balance is a steadily growing presence in the NBA. The brand has also signed deals with the LA Clippers’ Kawhi Leonard, the Denver Nuggets’ Jamal Murray, the Boston Celtics’ Jaylen Brown and the San Antonio Spurs’ Dejounte Murray, who is LaVine’s close childhood friend. Of the brand’s athletes, Leonard is currently the only one with a signature shoe.
LaVine was named to his second straight All-Star Game this season. The 27-year old guard currently ranks second on the Bulls in scoring average as the team sits in fifth in the Eastern Conference.
LaVine’s sneaker free agency isn’t the only contract decision he’s had to focus on this season however, as he will become a free agent at season’s end, due for a substantial raise.
