Vancouver Canucks prospect Elias Pettersson continued his strong season in the SHL on Thursday, breaking a 42-year-old record for points by an under-20 player.

Pettersson scored on a breakaway Thursday for his 23rd goal and record-breaking 55th point of the season in 43 games with Vaxjo Lakers HC of the Swedish Hockey League.

The record was previously set by Kent Nilsson during the 1975-76 season. Peter Forsberg sits third in SHL history with 48 points in 39 games as a 19-year-old in 1992-93.

Last month, Craig Button ranked No. 1 Pettersson among NHL-affiliated prospects.

The 19-year-old Pettersson was selected fifth overall by the Canucks in the 2017 NHL Draft. He represented Sweden at the World Juniors earlier this year, scoring five goals and posting seven points in seven games en route to a silver medal.
